How to make self-care a priority as a busy mum

"Self-care is a necessity, not an indulgence."

This quote from Emma Bennett, a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in working with new mums, is such a helpful mantra for all of us to adopt!

Are you constantly tired and grumpy? Do you feel like you’re being pulled in a million directions? Mum, it’s time for you to evaluate whether or not you’re treating self-care as a necessity!

Here are my three tips for integrating regular self-care into your daily life.

Work to overcome mum guilt

Mum guilt describes when mothers feel like they are failing or falling short of expectations, which can lead to feelings of anxiety, guilt, frustration, and doubt. If this is you, you might be pushing self-care aside because of these feelings. However, you are SO worthy of self-care time, regardless of whether or not you are the mum you are striving to be.

Self-care is incredibly useful for managing mum guilt. You deserve to feel strong and confident as a woman, and taking time to look after yourself can help you fight your anxiousness and frustration.

Communicate with your partner

It goes without saying that it is important for you and your partner to be on the same page. Make sure to communicate with your partner about how you need self-care time and why it’s important to you, in addition to when you intend on taking it.

Chances are your partner is in need of some self-care too! There’s nothing quite like working together as a team; see what you can do as a pair to make sure that each other has what they need in order to get in some “me time”.

Don’t overcomplicate it

Self-care time and tactics don’t need to be complicated! Time spent taking care of yourself doesn’t need to take hours or cost a lot of money. While leaving your house might be part of it, you technically don’t even need to leave your bedroom! Self-care can look like taking a nap, having a bubble bath, reading a book, or even buying yourself flowers--whatever you need to do to feel like you are taking time to relax, recharge and treat yourself.
